as the country turns out its pockets free software and open source is competitive with commercial software for the majority of corporate and personal needs. Its a marriage made in heaven. The first of the 2009 linux meetup will focus on a couple of meetups with an overview of how to do everything you used to do with commercial software with Linux and free / open source alternatives.

OpenOffice is the standard linux-based replacement for MS Office suite. I am interested in the *deficiencies* of OO for power users of MS office. IMHO, OO still does not meet the power and ease of use of MS office *in a business environment*. Interested in talking with members who have migrated a *business* from MS Office to OO.

Who attended?

  • 12 attendees
    •  I enjoyed this meeting more than previous gatherings of NYC Linux, in part because the early Sunday time meant that I was neither rushing to the meeting after work nor worried about getting home too late. I also enjoyed it because most of the attendees have experienced as independent contractors in a wider variety of IT settings than I encounter in my day job. If anyone needs "the Perl programmer" as part of any such contracting situation, please give me a shout-out.
    •  Nice and a pleasure as usual
