I'll be speaking at NYLUG this month about remixing Fedora to your specifications. From the NYLUG site: Please join us for possibly the last NYLUG meeting any time soon*, on Wednesday, April 15th, 2009. Have you ever wanted to make your own custom remix of Linux that suits *your* needs, rather what someone else decided your needs might be? It's easier to do this than you probably think. First, we'll talk about why you might want to roll your own customized distribution of Linux, and then all of the the Open Source tools you'll use to do this with Fedora, (livecd-creator, pungi), and which tool to choose. Then we'll actually perform the process for a livecd, and use the USB creation tools to put that on a USB stick, and then give away that USB stick to a lucky audience member :) Jon will also have assorted Fedora swag (stickers, some buttons, a few shirts, media, etc). PLEASE NOTE: In addition to RSVP'ing for this meetup, you MUST register in NYLUG's RSVP system (at http://rsvp.nylug.or g) in order to have your name on the list for building security.

So I'm going to try something new that's worked for other groups in the past. I plan to meet once a month, maybe even more often, at a bar around the city. We'll talk about Linux, what we're doing, network, etc. The first event of this series I'll hold at the Hop Devil Grill (there's a Hop Devil Lounge next door that we might migrate to - it's actually connected through a door in the middle) These guys are pretty strict about ID, so make sure you bring proper ID or else you probably won't get in. I'm limiting this to 15 to start,

as the country turns out its pockets free software and open source is competitive with commercial software for the majority of corporate and personal needs. Its a marriage made in heaven. The first of the 2009 linux meetup will focus on a couple of meetups with an overview of how to do everything you used to do with commercial software with Linux and free / open source alternatives.

Our first project meetup went so well we've decided that we'll do it on the last Sunday of every month! Our space at 3rd ward has been upgraded to a new wireless access point. We are starting to organize volunteers to assist others during the event (pick an hour you want to cover) Plan to attend whether you have software you want to run, hardware to install Linux on, a software project you are planning or working on, or just want to help others.
