I want, and need, to become proficient with the tools with which I work. For nearly a year my primary computers have run Fedora; for practical reasons and self-respect I hope to develop competence with shell scripting, perl, and rudimentary C++.
I have a great deal to learn; indeed, you might help me prioritize my efforts, and suggest the best resources and approaches study without the benefit of university courses.
Technically, the strength and security that can result when source code is open to scrutiny and criticism. Emotionally, exposure to the Open Source movement has bolstered my appreciation of humanity (after some years on Wall Street).

At present, Fedora. I find Ubuntu less challenging, but Fedora appears particularly suited to networking (quite disparate) computers -- I seen to learn more working out problems the occur under Fedora. I hope to gain exposure to other distros.
